Tam, Tom, and Laura Olin
Nothing but water all around ...
During the summer of 2010, daughter Laura was selected to serve as a crew member onboard the schooner Ocean Star, as part of the SeaMester - Semester At Sea program. Her port of departure was Soper's Hole, on the island of Tortola, in the British Virgin Islands.
Tam and I decided to give her a good send-off and explore BVI for ourselves. We stayed at one of Laurance Rockefeller's original Rock Resorts, the Little Dix Bay Resort on Virgin Gorda and visited another, his first resort, Caneel Bay Resort on St John.
Other points of interest included The Baths, North Sound, and Copper Mine Park on Virgin Gorda. On St. John, we took in Virgin Islands National Park and several of the local bars and hangouts, including the Quiet Mon Pub.
Our trip was all too brief, only four days, but it was a very memorable one.
For Laura, the twenty day sail throughout the Leeward Islands was life-changing. Navigating between the Virgin Islands, Saba, St. Eustatius, Nevis, St. Barts, and Antigua, Laura bunked with fifteen other students, shared crew responsibilities, became certified in seamanship, and took college-credit courses in marine science.
While on shore, she hiked the volcanic mountains of Nevis, biked along the beach on St. Kitts, and partied in places like Gustavia and English Harbor.
The Seamester voyage was an experience that Laura would never forget.
